Introduction
This article provides instructions on how to prepare a Ranger Pro endpoint (EP) for installation. This hardware is used in hazardous environments up to Class 1 Div 1 or Zone 0/1, and is manufactured by Baker Hughes.
Before you begin
Caution!
Are you working in an explosive (hazardous) environment (CI-D2, CII-D2 ATEX Zone 2, CI-D1)?
Areas are specified as hazardous when they contain (but not limited to) the following three fundamental components:
A flammable substance (which can be a gas, liquid, or solid)
An oxidizer
Any source of ignition
If the environment is hazardous, install the battery outside that area.
Make sure that you fully understand the required Hazard training, certification, and equipment needed to comply with state requirements, and that you follow the safety precautions.
You must follow the Ranger Pro service manual when installing the EP.
Follow the safety precautions required by your area/plant when working on or near an operating machine.
Use only the batteries that come with the Augury Ranger Pro battery kit! Note that the Kit and battery PNs may vary.
Do not open sensors inside a hazardous area. work in an indoor equipment room or a similar environment, away from hazardous areas.
Batteries for Ranger Pro devices should be installed in an indoor equipment room or a similar environment, away from hazardous areas.
It’s important to note that the battery installation tool contains a powerful magnet. Keep the tool away from the gateway otherwise the gateway might reset itself to factory settings.
Required tools and parts
Some of the EP standard installation parts are supplied in the field kit. Determine what other parts and tools you’ll need during the installation process. Make sure that only certified tools and equipment are allowed in hazardous areas.

Install the battery
1: Remove the e-module retaining ring. Turn the e-module retaining ring counterclockwise and stop when resistance decreases. Place the device on a flat surface. Use your index finger and apply firm pressure to the top of the e-module. Use your other hand and continue to unscrew and remove the retaining ring.
2: Remove the wireless e-module. Hold the device with the contactor pins of the e-module facing away from you. Using the thumbs of both hands, push the e-module IN and UP simultaneously.
3: Remove the battery retaining ring. Use the battery installation tool to remove the battery retaining ring. Turn the ring counterclockwise. Use the magnet in the tool to lift the ring from the device case.
4: The Ranger Pro device uses two O-rings to seal the unit against dust and moisture. To maintain the device’s IP67 dust and water resistance rating and prevent leaks, you must install and lubricate the O-rings properly.
Inspect the O-rings on the e-module and case to verify they are present, clean, and undamaged. Apply a very light coating of silicon-based O-ring grease to the O-rings.
There are two O-rings:
34 x 1 mm O-ring on the e-module
35 x 1mm O-ring on the case
5: Insert the battery with the positive (+) end of the battery facing upwards.
Caution: Use only approved D-sized lithium-thionyl chloride batteries for the Ranger Pro sensors.
6: Use the magnetic Ranger Pro battery installation tool to tighten the battery retaining ring. Hand tighten the ring until it contacts the battery, then torque to 5 N-m (44 in-lb).
7: Align the e-module with the contacts.
8: Align the e-module retaining ring over the e-module. If needed, hold the sensor in place with your finger.
9: To maintain the device’s IP67 rating, be careful to avoid damaging the O-rings. Turn the e module retaining ring clockwise two to three turns, and then counter-clockwise about ¼ turn, and repeat until the ring is hand-tight.
10: Verify that the device is tightly sealed. There should be no gap between the e-module retaining ring and the case.
Prepare the endpoint
1: Put a drop of Loctite threadlocker glue on the inner notch of the base.
2: Put the coupling nut and then the sensor side adaptor on the sensor and use the installation tool to lightly screw the Sensor Side Adaptor in place.
3: Put a bit of glue on the coupling nut.

Prepare the machine
Tip! Prepare all the machines you'll be working on before installing the endpoint.
1: Check that the EP is compatible with the machine's mounting locations before beginning.
Avoid mounting the EP in a position that might obstruct other critical machine parts used for routine maintenance procedures such as lubrication ports, fill/drain plugs, bolts, or fasteners.
2: Remove all the paint and epoxy to the bare metal at the mounting location using tools approved for the site and environment.
For Flat mounts, clean off a diameter of ~1.5-2 inches (40-50mm).
For Fin mounts, clean off the motor fin top, side, and bottom where the mount will make contact.
3: Clean the surface with a degreaser and lint-free rags so the mounting surface is free of paint, grease, or dirt.
4: If you’re working in a cold environment or on a cold machine, use a cordless blower to heat the machine's surface and mount. Don’t use electrically driven tools.
5: Apply the adhesive on the base. Do not use the gluing/adhesive method in subzero temperatures.
6: When using glue apply the activator onto the base and wait 10 seconds. Then apply the adhesive to the base, and apply another layer of the activator.
It is recommended to leave the coupling nut on the base pad when applying the adhesive to prevent the adhesive from contacting threads
7: Place the base on the machine then gently press the base towards the machine and hold it firmly until the adhesive is cured enough for the base to hold in place by itself. The amount of time you hold depends on the surface and ambient temperatures.
Mount the endpoint on the machine
If you didn’t prepare the endpoint earlier, do it now. See “prepare the endpoint” earlier in this article.
1: Thread the coupling nut onto the machine side adaptor until hand-tight, then start to tighten with the mounting wrenches.
2: Check that the alignment of the X-axis of the Ranger Pro sensor is aligned with the axial rotor direction of the machine. Tighten with a wrench.
3: If the alignment is not correct, loosen the coupling nut enough to twist the Ranger Pro sensor X-axis so that it is aligned with the axial direction of the rotor. While maintaining this positioning, tighten the coupling nut to the machine side adaptor.
If the EP isn’t sticking well, or it doesn’t feel secure
In a cold environment/machine, use a cordless blower to accelerate or intensify the curing process. Use caution and do not burn the adhesive. Keep the blower at a safe distance from the machine’s surface.
When applicable, secure the EP to the machine using a tether or other Augury-recommended securing methods. Make sure that the adhesive has dried before securing.
You now need to map the sensor.
